Introduction
Slides in Gamma are the fundamental building blocks of your presentations, documents, or webpages - each acting like a flexible section or canvas.
You can manually add new slides, generate them using AI, and customize their layout with text, images, media, and other elements.
🔷 Note: Editing works differently in the new Gamma. Presentations now use a fixed 16:9 canvas, and layouts are built on grids, with freeform placement when you need precise control.
How to Add a New Slide
Manually Adding a Slide
Open your gamma.
Click the + below a slide to insert a new blank slide after it.
Or open the pages panel on the left and click + New.
How to Add a Slide Using Agent
Click Agent at the top of the editor to open the chat.
Describe the slide you want, for example "Add a slide comparing our three pricing tiers after slide 3."
The agent adds the slide and shows you what it changed.
💎 Pro Tip: You can also open the pages panel, click the arrow next to + New, and choose Add new with AI or Add new from template.
How to Hide a Slide
You can choose to hide individual slides in your Gamma presentations and sites.
Right-click on the slide in the pages panel and click Hide.
Hidden slides stay in your presentation or site but won’t appear while presenting, or in the published website.
Bring them back anytime by right-clicking and selecting Unhide.
💎 Pro Tip: Use hidden slides to store backup content or alternate versions without deleting anything.
How to Edit Slides - A Quick Hack!
Gamma makes it easier to edit slides with a simple right-click.
Right-click on any slide in the pages panel to bring up a quick-access menu just for that slide.
🌀 Insight: From here, you can cut, copy, or duplicate a slide, copy it to another gamma, add a slide below, export it, hide it, or delete it.
FAQs & Common Issues
Can I add multiple slides at once?
Yes, if you're using Agent! You can ask it to add multiple slides in a single request with no hard limit on how many it can add at once. Keep in mind that Agent charges credits per slide it generates, so large additions will use a meaningful chunk of your monthly credits. For very large requests, you may get better results splitting the ask into a few smaller ones.
If you're adding slides manually, they need to be added one at a time.
Are there templates for slides?
Yes! Open the pages panel, click the arrow next to + New, and choose Add new from template.
To add a layout inside a slide, click Add block at the top of the editor and select Layouts.
Is there a limit to how many slides I can add?
There's no cap on total slides in a gamma — you can always keep growing a deck.
The one exception is the Create with AI generator, which is capped per prompt:
Paid workspaces: up to 100 slides per generation.
Free workspaces: up to 10 slides per generation.
This cap is specific to the initial generator flow and doesn't apply to Agent. If you need more slides beyond the generator cap, run additional prompts, use Agent to add more, or add slides manually.
Generating and editing slides with AI uses credits on all plans.
In the Create with AI generator, what's the difference between Freeform and Slide-by-slide?
Freeform lets the AI decide where each slide starts. It aims for your slide count, but it may merge or split your content to fit its sections, so an instruction written for "slide 7" may not land on slide 7.
Slide-by-slide starts a new slide only where you put a --- line, so each block of content (and any image instruction in it) stays on its own slide.
In Slide-by-slide, blocks beyond the number of slides you've selected are left out, even if your plan allows more. Raise the slide count to include them.
Do the generator's settings apply to every slide?
Yes. Audience, tone, amount of text, image source, and art style apply to the whole deck. There isn't a per-slide version.
If your content names a different audience or tone, the content wins over the settings.
Detailed text aims for roughly 100 words per slide (up to about 150), with title and visual slides kept shorter.
The slide count is a target. Your plan's maximum is a hard limit.
Anything you put in Additional instructions is treated as a must-follow rule and overrides your other instructions, except the slide limit. Rules like "every slide that mentions a figure must include an image" belong there.
Can image placeholders show a file name or figure number?
No. Image placeholders leave an empty image slot on the slides that need a visual, so you can add your own image later. No text is written into the slot.
With AI images, a file name or "Fig. 04" in your description is treated as part of what to draw, not as a caption.
How do I control slide sizes?
Open the three-dot menu (…) in the top right corner and click Page setup.
If you select a fixed ratio (e.g., 16:9), dotted guidelines will appear to help you manage your content.
Why did Agent overwrite my existing slide when I asked it to create a new diagram?
This can happen when you duplicate a slide and then ask Agent to generate a new diagram. Agent can sometimes misinterpret the instruction and update or overwrite the existing slide rather than creating a separate new one.
To add a new diagram without affecting your existing slides:
Click the + below a slide to insert a fresh blank slide where you want the new diagram to appear.
On the new slide, click Add block and choose Layouts or Diagrams, or type /timeline, /process, or /funnel.
Add your content directly into the new diagram layout.
Can I use Imagine to create diagrams for my slides instead of Agent?
Yes — if you want consistent styling across multiple diagram slides, creating each one in Imagine separately and inserting the downloaded images gives you full style control without the risk of Agent overwriting existing work.
