How do I add and edit images in Gamma?

How to upload, insert, and edit images in Gamma, including resizing, replacing, and using accent images.

Introduction

Adding images to your gamma enhances visual appeal and helps communicate your ideas more effectively. In this guide, we’ll cover how to upload, insert, and edit images, including resizing and working with accent and background images.

🌀 Insight: You can add images in three ways: the Add block menu, the slash command, or by dragging an image file straight onto a card.

How to Upload and Insert Images

Method 1: Using the Add Block Menu

  1. In the toolbar at the top of the editor, click Add block.

  2. Select Images.

  3. Choose an option:

    • Image upload or URL – Upload an image from your computer, or paste an image link.

    • Media library – Use an image you've already uploaded or generated.

    • Web image search or Stock photos – Find an image to use.

    • GIFs from GIPHY – Add an animated GIF.

    • AI images – Generate a new image with AI.

    • Icons, Pictographic illustrations, and Accent images are also available here.

🔷 Note: In gammas made before Gamma 5, you'll see an insert menu on the right-hand side of the editor instead of Add block. The image options are under Images there.

Method 2: Using the Slash Command

  1. In your gamma, type /image.

  2. Select your preferred upload method from the dropdown menu.

💎 Pro Tip: Try typing / followed by a keyword (e.g. /Unsplash) to jump straight into image search - faster than clicking through menus!

Method 3: Drag and Drop

  • Drag an image file from your computer and drop it onto a card.

Resizing and Adjusting Images

  • Click and drag the image borders to resize it as needed.

  • Use the alignment options to position the image.

Accent and Background Images

What is an Accent Image?

  • Accent images are design elements that fill part or all of a slide. They integrate with the slide layout to enhance the overall design.

Adding an Accent or Background Image

  • Accent image: click Add block, select Images, then choose Accent images.

  • Background image: select the card, then click Background image in the toolbar at the top of the editor.

  • In gammas made before Gamma 5: click Styling in the top-left corner of the card, then click Edit next to Accent image.

Editing a Background Image

  1. Select the card.

  2. In the toolbar at the top of the editor, use:

    • Background image – Swap the image.

    • Image fit – Choose how the image fills the card.

    • Change focus point – Choose which part of the image stays in view.

Replacing or Copying an Accent Image

  • Copy and paste one accent image onto another.

  • Paste a standard image onto an accent image to replace it.

  • Drag an accent image onto another accent image or into your gamma.

🌀 Insight: You can drag and drop an image onto an existing accent image to instantly replace it - no need to delete first.

Using your own images when generating with AI

  • When you create a gamma with AI, you can have Gamma use your own images. In the prompt bar, click the + button and select Upload files and photos, then add your images before you generate.

FAQs & Common Issues

What image file types can I upload?

  • PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, SVG, HEIC/HEIF, and AVIF.

  • HEIC/HEIF photos (common on iPhones) are converted to JPG automatically. You'll see a grey placeholder instead of a preview while they upload.

  • GIFs keep their animation, and GIFs and SVGs aren't resized. Other very large images are resized or compressed automatically after upload.

Why can't I upload an image?

  • "Image exceeds maximum dimensions": the image is over 50 megapixels. Resize it to a smaller pixel size and try again.

  • "Error uploading image," "This image failed to upload," or "Unable to upload image": these messages cover several causes. Check that:

    • The file is actually an image in one of the types above.

    • The file isn't damaged. Try opening it on your computer, or re-save it as a PNG or JPEG.

    • If it's an SVG, it doesn't link to outside files or images. Try exporting it as a plain SVG or a PNG.

    • If you pasted a link, the link goes straight to the image file. See "Why won't my Google Drive link work as an image URL?" below.

    • Your internet connection is stable. Refresh the page and try again.

  • Nothing happens when I drop a file: the file type isn't supported. Convert it to PNG or JPEG and try again.

Can I edit an image after inserting it?

  • Yes! You can resize, reposition, crop, and replace an image directly in your gamma.

  • For deeper AI-powered edits - restyling, erasing elements, removing backgrounds, expanding, and more - select the image and choose Advanced editing to open it in Imagine, Gamma's full-canvas image editor.

How do I remove an accent image?

  • Select the image, then click the trash icon in the toolbar at the top of the editor.

  • In gammas made before Gamma 5, click Styling in the top-left corner of the card and click the trash icon next to Accent image.

Can I animate an uploaded image?

  • No, animations are only supported for built-in Gamma elements (like GIF’s), not uploaded images.

What is the maximum file size for uploads?

  • Upload limits depend on what's being uploaded:

    • Images added to a gamma in the editor: there's no file size limit. The limit is on pixel size: up to 50 megapixels (about 8000×6250). The "max 5MB" hint on image cards is a suggestion, not a hard limit.

    • Importing files (PowerPoint, Word, etc.): 200 MB per file.

    • Importing PDFs: 100 MB per file (PDFs go through a separate processing step with a lower cap).

    • Media library uploads (images and videos): 200 MB per file.

    • Importing a PowerPoint to create a theme: 200 MB.

    • AI style reference images (for image generation): 10 MB.

How do I insert an image, or add two images to one slide?

  • Click Add block and select Images, or drag an image file straight onto the card.

  • Cards can hold more than one image: add a second image the same way and arrange them side by side, or click Agent at the top of the editor and ask the agent to add and arrange images for you.

How do I use an existing image from Media to generate a new one?

  • You can use an image you already have as the starting point for AI generation. Select the image, open the AI image options, and describe how you want the new image to differ. Gamma generates a new image based on your original plus your instructions.

Can I add alt text to my images?

  • Not at the moment. You can't add, edit, or remove alt text on images in Gamma.

Why won't my Google Drive (or Dropbox/OneDrive) link work as an image URL?

  • Share links from cloud storage open a preview page, not the image file itself. Gamma needs a link that goes directly to the image.

  • Easiest fix: upload the image instead.

  1. In Google Drive (or your storage app), right-click the image and select Download.

  2. In your gamma, type /image and select Upload, or drag the file straight onto your card.

  • Need to use a link? Use an image hosting service built for websites. Your link should:

  • Start with https://.

  • End in an image file type (like .png, .jpg, or .gif).

  • Be publicly viewable (no sign-in required).

💎 Pro Tip: Paste the link into a private/incognito browser window. If you see only the image, it'll work in Gamma.

Why do my AI images look low resolution, even on a paid plan?

  • An AI image's size is set by the image model that creates it. There's no separate quality, resolution, or DPI setting.

  • Images the agent creates use GPT Image 2 Mini (Lite and Standard effort) or GPT Image 2 (Max effort). Either way, they come out at about 1K, and the shape follows your card or image: about 1024×1024 for square images, 1536×864 for widescreen, and 1152×1536 for portrait.

  • A higher effort level can improve how an image looks, but it doesn't make the image larger.

Can I get print-quality AI images (for example, A4 at 300 DPI)?

  • Not from AI-generated images. You can't choose a DPI or a larger output size, and A4 at 300 DPI needs about 2480×3508 pixels. AI images will look softer if you print them at that size.

  • For print, upload your own high-resolution images instead.

  • When you save an image with Download as PNG, it's saved at up to 2,048 pixels on each side.
