What is the effort picker and how do I use it?

Learn how to use the effort picker in Gamma to control how much time and effort the AI agent puts into generating your gamma. Understand what each effort level does, how it affects generation speed, quality, and credit usage, and when to choose each one.

Introduction

Not every gamma needs the same amount of effort. Some generations are quick drafts; some are the board deck. The effort picker lets you choose how hard Gamma's AI works on each generation, so everyday creations stay fast and light on credits, and the ones that matter get our strongest models working their hardest.

🌀 Insight: Your plan sets your default generation level automatically — you don't have to change anything. The effort picker is a per-generation choice for when you want more (or less) effort on a specific gamma.

What are the generation levels?

There are three levels, each trading off speed, quality, and credit usage:

  • Lite delivers quick, solid results for everyday creations, and uses the fewest credits.

  • Standard is the recommended balance of quality and speed for most work.

  • Max puts our strongest models to work at full effort, for the gammas that matter most. It uses more credits and can take longer to complete.

What does Max do differently?

When you generate at the highest level, Gamma works harder across the board. Max gets you the most powerful AI models across text and visuals, and it also gets you deeper thinking from the models. It’s more about effort and quality than anything else.

  • Deeper research. Instead of a shallow search, Gamma digs into more sources, cross-checks facts, and cites where information came from. Available to all Pro plans and above, in all tiers.

  • Richer visuals. Our top image models are used to create rich and stunning visuals.

🔷 Note: Higher levels use more credits and can take a few minutes longer to finish - that extra time is the AI doing more work on your behalf.

How do I change the generation level?

You can change the level right where you generate.

Step 1: Open the level selector

When creating with AI, click the generation level selector in the prompt area. Your plan's default level is already selected.

Step 2: Choose a level

Pick the level that fits the task. Levels not included in your plan will show an upgrade prompt. One thing to note, you won’t be able to change the power mode after you’ve started the conversation.

💎 Pro Tip: Start in a lower level to rough out your ideas, then start a new conversation to re-run the version you like at a higher level when it's time to polish.

Which levels come with my plan?

Every plan has a default level, and paid plans unlock more of the ladder:

  • Free: Standard

  • Plus: Standard

  • Pro: Standard and Max

  • Ultra: Standard and Max

  • Business: Standard and Max

  • Enterprise: Standard and Max

FAQs & Common Issues

Does a higher level always cost more credits?

  • Higher levels use more credits per generation because they run stronger models.

  • Exact usage varies with the size and complexity of what you're creating, so the same level can cost different amounts on different gammas.

Do I need to change the level every time?

  • No. Your plan's default level applies automatically, and it's a good fit for most generations.

  • Changing the level is a per-generation choice, not a setting you have to manage.

Will a higher level make my gamma generate faster?

  • No, usually the opposite. Higher levels trade speed for quality, so the AI spends more time designing, and refining.

  • If speed is the priority, a lower level will get you a solid result fastest.

I picked a higher level but I'm not sure the result looks different. What am I paying for?

  • The biggest differences are in the work behind the deck: more powerful models, deeper thinking from the models, more facts verified, and stronger image models.

  • The difference is most visible on content-heavy gammas, like presentations with lots of input material to sort through and incorporate, and least visible on very short or simple ones.
