What is the Icon library and how do I use it?

Learn how to upload custom icons to Gamma, create workspace icon libraries, set a default icon library, and manage who can edit them.

Introduction

The Icon library lets your workspace upload and organize its own icons, so your team can use on-brand icons directly in the editor instead of Gamma's built-in sets. Admins can create multiple libraries, set a workspace default, and control who can manage them.

Why use custom icons?

  • Stay on brand. Your team uses your own icons instead of generic stock icons.

  • Upload once, use everywhere. Every member and Gamma 5 can use the same approved set in every gamma.

  • Works with your brand setup. Use your icons together with your workspace themes, fonts, and branded templates.

🔷 Note: Custom icon libraries are available on the Enterprise plan. Gamma's built-in icon sets are available separately.

What is the Icon library?

Every Gamma workspace includes two built-in icon sets: Icons (modern) and Icons (classic). The Icon library adds a third option: custom libraries owned by your workspace, filled with icons your team uploads.

With the Icon library, you can:

  • Create and name libraries for your workspace.

  • Upload, browse, search, rename, download, and delete custom icons.

  • Set a default library so your team starts with the right set.

  • Show or hide libraries in the editor.

  • Insert icons into your gamma or ask Gamma 5 to use a library for you.

How do I create an icon library and upload icons?

🔷 Note: Depending on your workspace settings, icon library management may be limited to workspace admins.

Step 1: Open the Icon library

From your Gamma dashboard, open Customize, then choose Icon library.

Step 2: Create a library and upload your icons

  1. Click Create.

  2. Give the library a name your team will recognize.

  3. Upload your icon files. You can choose multiple files or drag them into the upload area.

Supported file formats and how Gamma handles them:

Artwork type

How it's shown

Recoloring

Best for

Single-color SVG with a transparent background

Sharp at any size

Recolors cleanly

Icons that should match your theme colors

Multi-color SVG, EPS, AI

Sharp at any size (EPS and AI are converted to SVG)

Recoloring turns the whole icon one color

Icons that must keep exact brand colors

PNG, GIF, TIFF, ICO with a transparent background

Shown as uploaded

Recolors the shape and keeps the transparency

Detailed artwork; upload at high resolution

JPG, or any image without a transparent background

Shown as uploaded, including its background

Recoloring fills the whole image, so it becomes a solid block

Artwork you won't recolor

MP4 (animated)

Plays as a looping animation; stays animated in PowerPoint export

Can't be recolored

Motion accents

Files can be up to 5 MB each, and MP4s can be up to 5 seconds long.

Open a custom library whenever you want to upload more icons.

💎 Pro Tip: Give your library and icons clear, descriptive names. Names such as “Brand icons” and “Customer support” help your team find the right set and the right icon later.

Step 3: Set your default library

An admin can open a library's menu and choose Set as default. The default is the library your team starts with when inserting icons.

Choose a visible library as your default. If you want to hide or delete the current default, set another library as the default first.

How do I use my custom icons in a gamma

When you insert or replace an icon in the editor, your visible workspace libraries appear alongside Gamma's built-in sets.

  1. Open the icon picker.

  2. Choose the library you want to use.

  3. Search for an icon or browse the results.

  4. Click an icon to add it to your card.

You can swap an existing icon for another one from your library at any time.

How do I change icon colors?

Gamma's built-in icons are single-color and match your theme automatically. Custom icons keep their original colors until you change them.

  1. Select the icon in your gamma.

  2. Click Recolor icon in the toolbar.

  3. Choose a theme color or any custom color.

  4. To return to the original artwork, click Reset.

Recoloring changes only that icon in that gamma. The icon in your library stays the same.

You can also ask Gamma 5 to recolor icons, for example: “Make the icons on this card our accent color.” Gamma 5 doesn't recolor your custom icons unless you ask the agent or provide workspace or template instructions to do so.

💎 Pro Tip: If you want icons to follow your theme colors, upload single-color SVGs with a transparent background. If your icons must keep exact brand colors, upload full-color artwork and don't recolor it. Some teams keep one library of each.

How do icons work in Gamma 5?

When custom-icon support is available in your workspace, you can ask Gamma to use a library while creating or editing a gamma.

Step 1: Tell Gamma which library to use

Include the library name in your request. For example:

  • “Create an onboarding presentation using our Brand icons library.”

  • “Add icons from our Product icons library to the Features card.”

  • “Use the workspace default icon library for this gamma.”

Gamma uses the workspace default when you leave the library choice open. You can also ask for Modern or Classic icons.

💎 Pro Tip: Use workspace or template instructions to guide the agent which icon library you want to use.

Step 2: Describe the icons you need

Gamma finds matching icons as it writes your content. For a custom library, you can describe a concept such as “teamwork,” “customer support,” or “growth.”

If you want a particular icon, tell Gamma which one and where it should go. For example, “Use the rocket icon from our Brand icons library on the Launch card.” If Gamma asks you to choose from matching icons, select the one you want.

Step 3: Review and refine

Check the icons and their placement in your gamma. You can ask Gamma to change the library, replace an icon, or update the surrounding content. You can also make changes directly in the editor.

💎 Pro Tip: Say “Use only icons from our Brand icons library” when you want Gamma to stay within that set. If you're happy to mix libraries, say that Gamma can use the workspace default when it needs another option.

How do I manage icon libraries?

People with library-management permission can keep custom libraries tidy and on-brand:

  • Rename a library or icon to make it easier to recognize.

  • Upload more icons to a custom library.

  • Download the original files when you need them elsewhere.

  • Hide library in the editor to keep a library out of the picker, or Show library in the editor to make it available again.

  • Delete custom icons or libraries you no longer need.

Admins can also set the workspace default and choose whether everyone or only admins can manage libraries. Keep at least one library visible so your workspace has an active icon set.

🌀Insight: Icons already placed in a gamma keep displaying when their library or icon is deleted. Deleted items are unavailable for new insertions. Hiding a library keeps it out of the editor and Gamma 5's available library choices.

Governance and security

Governance

  • By default, every workspace member can manage icon libraries. Admins can limit this to admins only.

  • Only admins can set the workspace default library.

  • Hide a library to stop new use without affecting existing gammas.

Security and data

  • Icon libraries are private to your workspace. Other workspaces can't see or search them.

  • Uploaded files are checked to confirm their actual file type, and SVGs are cleaned of scripts and unsafe content.

  • Gamma indexes icon names and artwork so you can search by meaning.

  • Original files are kept so you can download them at any time.

  • When a workspace is deleted, its icon libraries and search index are permanently deleted.
