How do I style cards and adjust layout settings in my gamma?

How to style cards in gamma, change card color, adjust accent images, and use background image overlay.

Updated this week

Introduction

Card layouts are a visual building block in Gamma that combine text with an accent image - perfect for structuring content side by side.

By adjusting style settings like image position, background color, and mask overlays, you can create a gamma that’s visually engaging and easy to read (for smaller screens like your phone if needed).

How to Use Accent Images

  1. Click the top-left corner of the card you want to edit and select "Card styling."

  2. Above ”Accent image”, choose a layout:

    • "No image"

    • "Top"

    • "Right"

    • "Left"

    • "Background"

  3. Once selected, click "Edit" to change the image, or select "Remove accent image" to delete it.

💎 Pro Tip: To quickly change an accent image, just double-click directly on the image!

  • Change up your slide layouts by seamlessly positioning product photos, icons, or illustrations alongside your text.

How to Use a Background Image Overlay

If you want the background of your card to be a photo (instead of a solid color), you can use this method:

  1. In the same "Card styling" pop-up, choose "Background" from the ”Accent image” layout options.

  2. This unlocks styling options - select between Frosted, Faded, or Clear overlay styles.

  3. Adjust the ”overlay intensity” anywhere from 0%–100% to change how much the background image shows through.

  4. Finally, choose your ”overlay color” to match your theme or improve contrast.

💎 Pro Tip: Use darker overlays + light text for maximum readability on mobile.

  • This layout feature is ideal for hero slides, quotes, or image-heavy moments where you want the text to sit cleanly over a background photo.

How to Change a Card’s Background Color

If you’d prefer a solid color instead of a photo background:

  1. In the "Card styling" pop-up, scroll to the ”Card color” section.

  2. Choose a preset from your theme or pick any color to apply a solid background.

💎 Pro Tip: Stick with high contrast for better visibility on phones or when screen recording.

  • This layout feature is great for emphasizing key ideas, breaking up content sections, or using brand colors in your layout.

How to Make a Full-Bleed Card

Want your card to take over the entire screen, edge-to-edge? That’s a full-bleed card.

  • In the same "Card styling" pop-up, toggle on the ”Full-bleed card” option.

How to Align Your Content

Set how your text and visuals sit within a card:

  1. In the "Card styling" pop-up, go to Content alignment and choose:

    • Top align content

    • Center align content

    • Bottom align content

  • Adjusting alignment helps balance your layout visually, especially when mixing cards with images and text blocks.

Extra Tips for Mobile-Friendly Layouts

  • Use large fonts in your design theme for easy reading.

  • Limit to one idea per card for clarity on smaller screens.

  • Always preview in full screen to test mobile readability.

FAQs & Common Issues

Can I apply styling to all cards at once?

  • Not yet - each card is styled individually. But you can duplicate styled cards and swap the content for consistency.

  • If you are a Pro user, you can also apply some types of styling to all cards at once by clicking on the top right “Edit all cards with AI”, and ask AI to eg. “add right accent images to all of the cards”

What’s the difference between background color and background image?

  • Background color is a solid color fill, while a background image lets you set a photo or visual behind your content. You can use overlays to help text stand out when using background images.

Why can’t I see my text clearly on a background image?

  • Try adjusting the overlay style or intensity, or choosing a different image with more negative space. You can also switch to a solid background color for higher contrast.

Does changing card styling affect the rest of the gamma?

  • Nope - card styling is per-block. You can freely mix and match layouts across your gamma depending on the story you want to tell.

How do I make my cards look more consistent?

  • Use the same alignment, background style, and image positioning across key sections - or create a styled card you like and duplicate it as a starting point.
