Gamma isn't purpose-built as an ebook tool, but our Document format is a surprisingly capable fit. With multipage chapters, a table of contents, headers and footers, and PDF export, you can put together a polished ebook entirely in Gamma — just go in knowing it has some limitations.
🔷 Note: Page numbers and branded headers/footers require a Pro plan or higher. All other steps in this guide are available on any paid plan.
Setting Up Your Ebook
Step 1: Create a new gamma
From your Gamma dashboard, click Create New AI and choose how you want to add your content:
Generate — Describe your ebook topic and let Gamma draft a structured first version. Great as a starting point you’ll refine from there.
Paste — Copy and paste your existing text (from a doc, notes app, or AI tool) and Gamma will format it into cards. Note: Gamma’s AI will restructure and may rephrase your content — see the FAQ below if you need to preserve your wording exactly.
Import — Upload a Word document or PDF and Gamma will convert it into editable cards. Best if you’ve already written your ebook content elsewhere.
Start blank — Skip AI generation and build your ebook manually, card by card.
Step 2: Choose Document format
On the creation screen, select Document as your format. Document is optimized for long-form content like ebooks, PDF guides, and course materials — unlike Presentation format, it’s designed for vertical reading and clean PDF export.

Step 3: Set your page size
For an ebook that exports cleanly as a PDF, set your page size to Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4 — these are the standard sizes for downloadable guides and printed documents.
Open your gamma and click the three-dot menu (…) in the top right corner.
Select Page Setup.
Under Page size, choose Letter or A4.
💎 Pro Tip: If you want a fluid, scrollable ebook that adapts to screen size rather than fixed page dimensions, leave your gamma on the default Fluid setting instead. This works well for ebooks read online rather than printed or downloaded.
Building Your Ebook
Step 1: Design your cover page
Your ebook's first card is your cover — there's no special cover page type in Gamma, so it's just a regular card you style to look like one.
For a polished ebook cover:
On your first card, click the card styling icon (the paint palette) in the card toolbar.
Toggle on Full-bleed card to make your image or background fill the card edge-to-edge.
Add a large display title, a subtitle, and your name or brand. You can also add an eyebrow (small text above the title) for extra polish.
Use Backgrounds to apply a full-bleed image. If your image is busy, add a gradient or color overlay so your title stays readable.
💎 Pro Tip: Use a PNG or SVG file for any logo you place on your cover — these formats support transparent backgrounds, so your logo will sit cleanly over any image or color.
Step 2: Organize chapters with multipage
Use Gamma's multipage feature to keep your ebook organized — each page can represent a chapter or section, all under one gamma link.
Open the Pages panel from the top-left toolbar.
Click + Add page to add a new chapter.
Choose Blank or Add page with AI to generate chapter content.
New pages inherit the format and page size of your current page, so your layout stays consistent throughout.
Step 3: Add a Table of Contents
A Table of Contents helps readers navigate your ebook and gives it a professional, structured feel.
On your first page (or a dedicated contents page), type /table of contents to insert a TOC block.
Gamma will automatically populate it with your card titles.
🔷 Note: If your Table of Contents is very long, it may span more than one card. If it does, check your PDF export to make sure all entries are visible — see the FAQ below for more detail.
Step 4: Add page numbers and branding (Pro plan and above)
Card headers and footers let you add page numbers, your logo, or a brand tagline to every page of your ebook automatically.
Click the three-dot menu (…) in the top right corner of your gamma.
Select Page Setup.
Toggle on Headers or Footers and configure your content.
Page numbers appear as Section numbers and are included in both PDF and PPTX exports.
Exporting Your Ebook
Once your ebook is ready, you can share it as a live link or export it as a PDF.
To export as PDF:
Click the Share button in the top right corner.
Select Export.
Choose PDF and download your file.
💎 Pro Tip: Before exporting, use Preview to check how your ebook looks at full page size — this helps you catch any content that's running close to the edges before your final export.
FAQs & Common Issues
Can I export my ebook as an ePub or Kindle file?
Not currently. Gamma exports to PDF, which works well for downloadable guides, lead magnets, and content sold through platforms like Gumroad or Stan Store.
My ebook PDF looks landscape/sideways — how do I fix that?
Gamma uses landscape orientation by default for presentations. For ebooks, make sure you have selected Document format with Letter or A4 page size in Page Setup — these output in the correct portrait orientation for ebooks.
Alternatively, using Fluid size will create a scrollable format that adapts to screen size rather than locking to a fixed orientation.
The AI rewrote or removed my content when I pasted it in — what happened?
Gamma's AI may rephrase or restructure pasted content as part of the import process.
To preserve your content exactly as written, paste it into a Text block directly rather than using the AI generation flow. You can also use Import file to bring in a Word or PDF document while keeping your formatting intact.
My Table of Contents got cut off in the PDF export.
This is a known limitation when a TOC spans more than one card. Only the first card's content will appear if the TOC overflows.
As a workaround, shorten your chapter titles or split your TOC across two separate cards manually, labeling the second as a continuation.
Can I use Imagine to create diagrams for my ebook instead of Agent?
Yes — if you want consistent styling across multiple diagram pages, creating each one separately in Imagine and inserting the downloaded images into your ebook gives you full style control without the risk of Agent overwriting existing work.
Can I sell my Gamma ebook?
Yes! Many creators export their Gamma ebooks as PDFs and sell them through platforms like Gumroad, Stan Store, or their own websites.
Note that Gamma does not process payments or handle distribution — you'll need a separate platform for selling.
