Introduction
Already have content created elsewhere? Instead of starting from scratch, you can import documents or presentations directly into Gamma and turn them into editable gammas.
With Gamma 5, import has been rebuilt from the ground up. Imported PowerPoint decks now land faithfully, keeping your original layouts and structure intact, and everything stays fully editable once it arrives. You can also ask Gamma to improve your deck during import, with updated styling and layouts.
🌀 Insight: Importing works with a wide range of sources, including files, webpages, and Google Drive, so you can quickly jumpstart your work using content you've already written.
How to Import Slides or Docs into Gamma
Gamma can import your file faithfully, or improve your presentation with updated styling and layouts. You choose what happens during import:
Attach your file. From your Gamma home screen, click Import, then upload your file or paste a link.
Tell Gamma what you want. Let Gamma know whether to import your content exactly as-is or improve it with new styling and layouts, and Gamma will import it the way you want.
Keep editing. Once your content is in Gamma, keep making it better, either manually or with AI.
What Can I Do After Importing?
Once your deck lands in Gamma, you can keep it exactly as it is, or ask Gamma to improve it. Using AI chat or manual editing, you can apply a new theme, rework layouts, translate your content, and more.
💎 Pro Tip: If you want Gamma to preserve your deck exactly, ask for a faithful import. You can always restyle or redesign it later.
Making Adjustments
Once imported, you can:
Edit the content.
Add visuals.
Use AI chat to rewrite or reformat slides.
Apply a new theme or design layout.
Debugging Import Issues
If something didn't import correctly:
Try exporting your file as .docx or .pptx before importing.
If you're using your file as a source rather than importing it, you can also copy and paste the content directly into Gamma.
FAQs & Common Issues
Why did some of my charts import as images?
Most content imports as fully editable, but some charts arrive as static images rather than editable Gamma charts.
You can still move, resize, and crop these images like any other image.
To make a chart editable, recreate it using Gamma's chart block and enter your data.
Will my styles and layouts import?
With the rebuilt import, Gamma preserves your original slide layouts and structure much more faithfully than before, and imported decks stay fully editable.
My Google Drive import isn't working - what can I do?
First, make sure you have connected the Google Drive connector and authenticated with your Google account.
If the import still fails, export the file as a PowerPoint (.pptx) or Word (.docx) file and try importing that instead.
Can I import content from Notion?
Yes! You can import public Notion docs, or simply copy and paste directly into Gamma.
Can I use an Excel (.xlsx) file to create a Gamma presentation?
Excel files (.xlsx) cannot be imported directly into Gamma. Here are two workarounds:
Convert to CSV: Save your Excel file as a .csv file, then upload the CSV directly to the Gamma AI Agent in your conversation. The agent can read and work with CSV data.
Use Google Sheets + Google Drive connector: Upload your Excel file to Google Sheets, then use the Google Drive connector in the Gamma AI Agent to let the agent read the file directly from your Drive.
Are there maximum file size limits for uploads?
Upload limits depend on what's being uploaded:
Importing files (PowerPoint, Word, etc.): 200 MB per file.
Importing PDFs: 100 MB per file (PDFs go through a separate processing step with a lower cap).
Media library uploads (images and videos): 200 MB per file.
Images generally: besides file size, there's a dimensions cap of 50 megapixels (roughly 8000×6250). Larger images are rejected even if they're small in MB.
AI style reference images (for image generation): 10 MB.
