What is Imagine and how do I design with it?

Learn about Imagine, Gamma's dedicated AI design canvas.

Updated this week

Introduction

Imagine is Gamma's dedicated AI design canvas. It lets you create standalone visual assets — infographics, posters, logos, invites, and more — from a simple text description, with optional image references to guide the style. With Imagine, you can edit images, including:

  • Restyling and resizing images without losing detail

  • Erasing elements within an image or compositing elements from multiple images

  • Cropping image, removing backgrounds, and more!

Imagine gives you a full creative workspace with tools to generate, edit, and refine your graphics until they're exactly right.

🌀 Insight: Imagine uses credits to generate and edit images, and is only available on Pro plans and higher.

What can I create with Imagine?

Imagine supports a range of graphic types to fit your needs:

  • Infographic — Data visuals and charts.

  • Poster — Promotional and event posters.

  • Diagram — Flowcharts and process diagrams.

  • Social Media Post — Content for social platforms.

  • Logo — Brand marks and symbols.

  • Invite — Invitations and save-the-dates.

  • Calendar & Schedule — Calendars and timelines.

  • Team Structure — Org charts and team pages.

  • Something else — Describe anything you want.

Each graphic type comes with a curated set of layouts to help structure your design. If none of the preset types fit your needs, choose Something else and describe exactly what you're looking for.

How do I get started?

Step 1: Open Imagine

From the Gamma dashboard, click Create and select Create graphics to open the Imagine wizard.

You can also go to the AI Images page and click Create graphics.

Step 2: Choose a graphic type

Pick the type of graphic you'd like to create. Each type shows a brief description to help you decide.

Step 3: Pick a layout

After selecting a type, you'll see layout options tailored to your choice. Each layout suggests a visual structure for your graphic.

🔷 Note: If you chose Something else, you'll skip this step and go straight to describing your graphic.

Step 4: Describe your graphic

Enter a text prompt describing what you want. Be specific — include details about the content, tone, and purpose of your graphic.

You can also configure:

  • Theme — Apply one of your Gamma themes to influence the visual style.

  • Aspect ratio — Choose from Square (1:1), Portrait (3:4, 4:5, 9:16), or Landscape (4:3, 16:9).

  • Number of variations — Generate up to 3 variations at once.

  • Reference images (optional) — Upload images to guide the visual style.

  • Illustration style (infographics only) — Choose from styles like Isometric, Watercolor, Doodle, Polished Flat, and more.

💎 Pro Tip: The more specific your prompt, the better the result. Include content, tone, and purpose — for example, "a pastel-toned event poster for a summer rooftop party with a bold headline and date."

Step 5: Review your variations

Imagine generates multiple creative variations of your graphic, each exploring a different angle or aesthetic. Browse through them and select the one that best fits your vision.

Step 6: Edit on the canvas

Once you pick a variation, you'll enter the canvas editor where you can continue refining it.

What editing tools are available on the canvas?

After selecting a graphic, you have access to the following tools:

  • Generate more — Create additional variations with new prompts or settings.

  • Freeform edit — Describe changes in plain text (e.g., "make the background darker" or "change the title to say Q3 Results").

  • Crop — Adjust the frame and dimensions.

  • Resize — Extend or constrain the image beyond the original dimensions.

  • Eraser — Remove elements or backgrounds using AI.

  • Restyle — Apply a different visual style to your graphic.

💎 Pro Tip: Each edit is saved as a new version, so you can always go back to a previous state — your graphic keeps a full version history.

Can I use my Gamma theme with Imagine?

Yes! When setting up your graphic, you can select any of your saved Gamma themes. The theme's colors and typography will influence the generated graphic, helping you keep your visuals on-brand.

Where are my graphics saved?

Your Imagine graphics are saved automatically to the AI Images dashboard.
